Starfleet and Maquis
Starfleet serves the United Federation of Plants in exploring the unknown, making scientific discoveries, acting as diplomatics, and providing defense. It started in 2151 with one ship, and has since then grown to have a fleet of starships and starbases. It's headquarters are in San Francisco on Earth where it originated. Now in the 24th century, there are many different types of species in Starfleet working together.
In 2370 the Cardassian Federation Treaty was signed giving a definite border to their territories and created the Demilitarized Zone. However, due to this treaty many Federation colonies were expected to find new homes. Many of these people formed a group instead that became known as the Maquis. The Maquis goals were to fight for the right to live on their land.
They were mostly killed off in 2374 when the Cardassians allied with the Dominion, but now since 2377 they have been slowly rebuilding. This new Maquis is made of people from the former group, and people who have newly joined. They have the same primary goal. They want back the land that was taken from them in the Treaty, but their way of doing it is different now. Everything they do ensures Starfleet is not to learn they exist again. Their goals have changed more to long term than short term. They don't just want the land back, they want to ensure they keep it.
